A Maine 501(c)(3) nonprofit ending mental health stigma through film, community & care
Mental Health Resources

Free, immediate help — for you or someone you love.

Common Ground Friends is not a crisis service, but these trusted, no-cost resources are. This page exists because finding help should never be the hardest part of asking for it.

If you need help today

Reaching out is not weakness — it is the first act of recovery. If you are in emotional distress, call or text 988 any time, day or night; a trained counselor will answer. If you are in Maine and facing a mental health or substance use emergency, the Maine Crisis Line (1-888-568-1112) can dispatch mobile crisis support in many communities. In a life-threatening emergency, always call 911.

If you're helping someone else

You don't need the perfect words. Listen without correcting, ask directly how they are doing, and stay with them while they call one of the lines below — a person is far more likely to reach out with someone beside them. NAMI Maine's helpline (1-800-464-5767) can coach family members and friends on what to do next, from safety planning to finding local support groups.

If you need housing, food, or treatment

211 Maine is the front door to nearly every service in the state: emergency shelter, food programs, heating help, transportation, recovery and treatment options. Dial 211, text your zip code to 898-211, or search 211maine.org. Specialists are available around the clock and every call is free and confidential.
